A Visit to Old Castlereagh

Falls near Gamble Lake
It is easy to see why Robert Gamble and his neighbours decided in 1819 to settle at Castlereagh, Nova Scotia.  High on the mountain, overlooking the Bay of Fundy, it provided them with all they needed to live a happy and prosperous life.  Away from the bustling coastal villages of Portapique, Economy, Bass River and Great Village, it was peaceful - a prefect place for the clan to thrive.  Although it was quite unusual, there is a lovely lake, Gamble Lake on Robert's Grant - blue, clear and still teeming with fish.

The original families of Castlereagh were the Robert Gamble family, the Samuel Beattie Family (Samuel was Martha Gamble's brother), the John Crawford Family and the Robert Starritt family.  While all the men farmed their land grants, each also brought other skills to the community.  The Gambles were barrel makers and also took part in the Shad fishery down on the Bay.  There were boot makers, carpenters, stone masons among the men and the women were all adept in keeping their vegetable gardens and caring for their livestock.

John William's Barrel Factory
If we were to visit John William Gamble's (My great grandfather)  home, you would see a small 2 story home attached to a long shed where the barrels were made.  These barrels were used for packing fish and potatoes for market and for storing their own produce such as apples.  With 10 children, including the three sets of twins, it was a busy place.

Next we'd see Albert Gamble's home where the Post Office was located.  It was 16 miles to Portapique and Albert's Uncle Robert was paid $99.56 a year to ride the mail back and forth twice a week.

Robert Gamble's home would be next and it was presided over by Aunt Debbie (Deborah Reid) Gamble, who appears to have been the queen bee of the community.  She was the Church Lady and there was always a basket by her door with the makings of socks for the missions.  She was the Sunday School Teacher and leader of the Women's Mission Band.

Before the Presbyterian Church was built at Castlereagh, Great Aunt Hattie Gamble says, "The women up the mountain would walk to Portapique with their babies in their arms and carrying their shoes to save the leather."

Known far and wide for their grand picnics, the Gamble Family entertained such notables as Joseph Howe, - Father of Confederation in the grove behind great great grandfather, Robert Gamble's home..

Susan Belle and Julia West Gamble
Frank and Hattie Gamble
The trip to Castlereagh wouldn't be complete without a stop at Harvey Gambles'.  The people of the village were known for their hospitality and this home was no different.  There was always a warm reception and the young people had parties and dances there.  Harvey's daughter, Myrtle Gamble Richards was a well known fiddler.

Over the next two hundred years, the village of Castlereagh blossomed, boomed at the opening of the local Silica Mine and then declined into a ghost town in the mid 1900s.  Many in the family kept their land and would spend summer holidays up on the mountain.  Helen Gamble tells of leaving town to move to Bass River.  There was one old hen they could not catch and there was a barrel of buckwheat for which there was no room.  Next summer when they went up to open the house, they found all the buckwheat gone and the barrel was full of eggs.

In the old cemetery rests Robert Gamble (my great great great grandfather), his son, John Gamble (my great great grandfather) , his son, John William (my great grandfather) and their families.

What a testament to the Gamble family, when, after almost 200 years they still are remembered for their humour and hospitality!

My thanks for these anecdotes to my Great Aunt Hattie Gamble, Helen Abbott Gamble and Margaret Gamble Grue.

You might want to count your toes...

Genetics 'R' Us:

Chesley Teed - Twin
When many of our ancestors arrived from other parts of the world, the population of Nova Scotia was very small and most people stuck pretty much to their own communities.  It's not surprising, then, that the families intermingled with cousins marrying cousins and siblings marrying siblings from another family.

My great great aunt, Lucy Jane Bragg married her first cousin Andrew Taylor who is also my 1st cousin, three times removed.

Ezekiel Peers married Mary Teed

Jerusha Peers married Daniel Teed

Elizabeth Peers married her adopted brother, Abraham Brown

Mary Peers married her adopted brother, Isaac Brown

Ephraim Peers married Phoebe Teed

John H. Peers married Eleanor Peers

Daniel Teed married Mary Elizabeth Teed

Thomas Swallow married Hannah Teed

Abigail Teed had an extra toe on each foot.

Alexander Bolding Peers married Catherine Shields, his aunt's sister

There there are the twins:

Elizabeth Ann Taylor (1879 - 1944) (1st cousin, twice removed)
John Woodland Taylor (1879 - 1944) (1st cousin, twice removed)

Grave of Bella Gamble Starritt - Twin of
my Grandmother, Julia West
Gamble Bragg
Julia West Gamble (1883 - 1950) Grandmother
Susan Belle Gamble (1883 - 1940) Great Aunt

Frank Gamble (1880 - 1933) Great Uncle
Flora Ann Gamble (1880 - 1880) Great Aunt

Ernest Crawford Gamble (1885 - 1886) Great Uncle
Martin Luthur Gamble (1885 - 1886) Great Uncle

Lorna Francis Gamble (1917 - 1958) 1st cousin, once removed
Frank Leslie Gamble (1917 - 1941) 1st cousin, once removed

David Tanner Gamble (1928 - 1952) 1st cousin, once removed
Donald Roy Gamble (1928 - 1933) 1st cousin, once removed

Elizabeth A. Teed (1867 - ?) 2nd cousin, twice removed
James Dixon Teed (1867 - 1900) 2nd cousin, twice removed

The Gamble Girls - Back r - l: Julia, Bella,
Hattie.  Front r - l - Ruth and Cousin Annie
Gamble
George Daniel Palmer (1886 - 1886) - 3rd cousin, once removed
William Thomas Palmer (1886 - 1955) -3rd cousin, once removed

James ( Jim) Gamble (1860 - 1928) - great great uncle
Robert (Bob) Gamble (1860 - 1908) - great great uncle

My great aunt Ruth Agnes Gamble was the daughter of a twin, the sister of 3 sets of twins, the mother of twins and the grandmother of twins.

Miscellaneous notes:

If you were a member of the Johnson clan at Truro, there was a probability that you or one of your siblings was deaf.  Related to the Johnsons, the Fulton family had quite a number of children born with a club foot.  If you are a Bragg, it's likely you have icy blue eyes and if you were a Gamble, you might have played the fiddle and laughed a lot (with all those twins - what else could you do?).

What's in a Name?

Suzanne
It's always interesting to know where your name came from.  You may have been named for a favourite aunt or grandfather.  I was named after my cousin, Carolyn Bragg from Collingwood, Nova Scotia.  My Mom thought she was the most beautiful baby ever - but she changed the Carolyn to Marilyn to avoid confusion.  When my daughter was born, she got the Carolyn back.  We are not always happy with our parent's choices and so, at the age of 3, I insisted my name was Suzie and would not answer to anything else.  When my little sister came along, she became Suzanne - to thwart the Suzie thing - and I went back to being Marilyn.  (Sorry, Suzanne).

There are times, however, when we can be grateful for not being named for an ancestor and I've found a few in my research to prove the point.  There was a family legend that all first born boys in the Symons family were called William - with no middle name.  The truth is, however, that for many centuries the oldest male in the Symons' families was named Sampson.  Glad I didn't know that when Bill was born!

Here are just a few of our ancestors you can be glad you were not named for:

You could have been Ezekiel..
Burpee S. Miller, Brunette Johnson, Beulah Knight, Artemas Betts,  Chadsey Swallow, Crowe Campbell,  Ebenezer Fisher,  Eliakim Tupper, Elilles Fountain, Eudavilla Augusta Studivan,  Fidelia Richards, Flavilla Knapp,  Gerhom Flagg, Hepzibah Teed, Jabez Eagles, Lenthall Kibbey, Manford Cranswick Swallow, Neltreenlie Blanch O'Brien,  Persis Eames, Rhuharah Treen, Sedquist Ripley, Sigvulda Burgess,  Stukeley Horton, Theophilus Darius Betts and Titus Crawford.

Thomas Cheeseman Swallow
During the early nineteenth century, biblical names were very popular so we see many Isaacs, Ephraims, Jacobs, Ezekials, Abrahams, Benjamins and Calebs.  We also have a set of twins named Martin Luthur and John Knox Gamble.

Children often had their mother's maiden name for a middle name.  Alexander Peers and Mary Bolding had a son, Daniel Bolding Peers.  His wife was Mary Sweeney and their son was Barney Sweeney Peers.  Mary Sweeney's mother was Ellen Doherty, so the couple also had a son, James Doherty Peers.  Thomas Swallow's mother was a Cheeseman, so one of his sons was Thomas Cheeseman Swallow.  John Bragg and Jane Rogers' daughter Amy Ann named her youngest son John Bragg Carter.  It's pretty easy to follow the generations this way.

John Bragg Carter
The most common names, as may be expected are: John, William, Mary, Jane, Elizabeth, Thomas, Daniel,  David, Eleanor, George, Hannah, Henry, and James.

So what's in a name?   Each name represents a personal story, a family history and the hope that each new birth brings.

Grave of Elizabeth Patterson
Robie Street Cemetery
Truro, Nova Scotia
William Johnson was the son of James Johnson and Elizabeth Patterson, original settlers of Truro, Nova Scotia.  He was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire and travelled with his parents in 1761 to Canada.  As a young man, he was living in Brookfield, a village just south of Truro and was married to Sarah Miller. They had 9 children.

In the year 1792 the Brookfield settlers, in conjunction with the people of Truro, were waging a battle over the location of the portion of the great Pictou Road, leading through both places.  Before the road was established there were two bridle paths or blazed trails, one the present road leading from Truro, beyond Brookfield, the other, from Truro, called Young's Road, meeting the first at a place known as "Tuckers Clearing".

One of these tracks was to be opened at public expense to form part of the Pictou Road.  Government left it to the Truro and Brookfield people to determine which path should be chosen.  The people from Truro, headed by old Lieutenant John  Johnson, (William's Uncle) insisted on a bet of five gallons of rum, that a Truro man could walk the line his people wanted in less time that a Brookfield resident could cover the route of their choice.

Memorial Plaque
The day and time of starting for the walking match was settled.  Long John Archibald was chosen for the Truro route and William Johnson for that of the Brookfield track.  At the time appointed both started.  The Brookfielders had a horse concealed on the track for their man to ride, which he used the best part of the way.  As a result, Johnson reached Tuckers Clearing and walked about twenty rods into Young's Road toward Truro, where he met Archibald.  The Brookfield route was therefore confirmed.

The manner in which it was obtained was kept a profound secret by the parties interested for 6 or 7 years afterwards.

Parson Waddell, on being made acquainted with the circumstances in Brookfield remarked he did not hesitate to say it was the most scandalous transaction he had ever heard of.
